The Story Behind the Oil

Myrtle is one of the most scripturally significant plants in all of the Bible. In Isaiah 41:19, God promises to plant myrtle in the wilderness as a sign of His restorative power. In Zechariah’s vision, myrtle trees stand among the horses of God, and an angel of the Lord waits beneath them (Zechariah 1:8-11). Myrtle branches were carried at the Feast of Tabernacles as a symbol of joy, restoration, and abundance. In Nehemiah 8:15, the people of Israel returned from exile carrying myrtle to build their booths.

Myrtus communis — the common myrtle — is a Mediterranean shrub whose steam-distilled leaves and twigs yield an essential oil of remarkable versatility and gentleness.
